After creating a new Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) profile, you must configure the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager to use the new MAPI profile.
Note: For instructions on how to create a new MAPI profile in Microsoft Outlook see KB02083.
Choose one of the following procedures:
- If you can open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, configure BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
- If you cannot open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, modify the BlackBerry registry settings.
Configure BlackBerry Desktop Manager
To configure the BlackBerry Desktop Manager to use the new MAPI profile, configure the organizer applications and assign the new MAPI profile as the default profile.
Task 1 - Configure the organizer applications
BlackBerry Desktop Manager version 4.5 to 5.0 (screen shots for steps 3 to 7 are below)
- Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer, and open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
- Click Synchronize.
- Click the Synchronization link on the left side of the screen, then click the Synchronization button.
- Select a BlackBerry smartphone organizer application, and click Setup.
- Select a desktop organizer application, and click Next.
- Select synchronization options, and click Next.

- Select the new Microsoft® Outlook® MAPI profile and settings, and click Next.

- Click Finish.
- Repeat steps 4 to 8 for the remaining BlackBerry smartphone organizer applications.
- Click OK to close the Select Device application window.
- Click the Synchronize link on the left side of the screen, and click the Synchronize button.
BlackBerry Desktop Manager version 4.3
- Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer, and open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
- Click Synchronize, and click on the Configuration tab.
- Click Configure synch.
- Select a BlackBerry smartphone organizer application, and click Setup.
- Select a desktop organizer application, and click Next.
- Select synchronization options, and click Next.
- In Microsoft® Outlook® options select the new MAPI profile and click Next.
- Click Finish.
- Repeat steps 4 to 8 for the remaining BlackBerry smartphone organizer applications.
- Click OK to close the Select Device application window.
- Click the Synchronize link on the left side of the screen, and click the Synchronize button.
BlackBerry Desktop Manager version 4.2
- Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer, and open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
- Click Synchronize, and click on the Configuration tab.
- Click Configure synch.
- Select a BlackBerry smartphone organizer application, and click Choose.
- Select Microsoft Outlook from the Available Translators list.
- Click Options.
- Select the new MAPI profile from the drop down menu and select Ok.
- Choose the appropriate operation from the following list:
- Synchronize – This option allows the BlackBerry Desktop Manager to synchronize updated information between the BlackBerry smartphone and the desktop organizer application. Select this option if changes should reflect on both the BlackBerry smartphone and Microsoft Outlook.
- Export – This option exports organizer data from the BlackBerry smartphone to the desktop organizer application.
- Import – This option imports organizer data information from the desktop organizer application to the BlackBerry smartphone.
Note: For both the Export and Import operations, a prompt will appear to accept changes if similar organizer data exists in the desktop organizer application or on the BlackBerry smartphone.
- Click OK.
- Repeat steps 4 - 9 for any additional organizer applications.
- Click OK to close the Configuration window.
- Click the Synchronize tab, and click Synchronize now.
BlackBerry Desktop Manager versions 4.0 and 4.1
- Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer, and open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
- Click Intellisync® and click Configure PIM.
- Select a BlackBerry smartphone organizer application, and click Choose.
- Select Microsoft Outlook from the Available Translators list.
- Click Options.
- Select the new MAPI profile from the drop down menu and select Ok.
- Choose the appropriate operation from the following list:
- Synchronize – This option allows the BlackBerry Desktop Manager to synchronize updated information between the BlackBerry smartphone and the desktop organizer application. Select this option if changes should reflect on both the BlackBerry smartphone and Microsoft Outlook.
- Export – This option exports organizer data from the BlackBerry smartphone to the desktop organizer application.
- Import – This option imports organizer data information from the desktop organizer application to the BlackBerry smartphone.
Note: For both the Export and Import operations, a prompt will appear to accept changes if similar organizer data exists in the desktop organizer application or on the BlackBerry smartphone.
- Click OK.
- Repeat steps 4 - 9 for any additional organizer applications.
- Click OK to close the Configuration window.
- From the Intellisync window, select Synchronize PIM, and click Synchronize.
Task 2 - Assign the new MAPI profile as the default profile
You can assign the new MAPI profile either in the Redirector Settings or from the Options menu.
In the Redirector Settings
- In the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, double-click Redirector Settings or Email Settings.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Click Profile Settings.
- Select Always use this profile.
- From the drop-down list, click the new MAPI profile.
- Click OK > OK.
From the Options menu
- In the Options menu, click Email Profile Settings.
- Make sure Always use this profile is selected.
- From the drop-down menu, select the new profile.
- Restart the BlackBerry Desktop Manager when prompted.
Modify the BlackBerry Registry Settings
If you cannot open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, modify the registry settings to use the new MAPI profile.
Warning: Modifying the computer registry can cause substantial damage to the Windows® operating system. Document and back up the existing registry entries prior to implementing any changes.
- Close the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
- Open the Registry Editor.
- Go to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareResearch In MotionBlackBerry
- In the right pane, click the MAPIProfile variable.
- Press the Delete key.
- In the Confirm Value Delete dialog box, click Yes.
- Close the Registry Editor.
- Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer.
- Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. The Choose Profile dialog box appears.
- In the Profile Name drop-down list, select the new MAPI profile and click OK.
Note: If you changed the default profile in Microsoft Outlook, restore it. Otherwise, you will be prompted with the setup wizard next time you open Microsoft Outlook.
